Job 14:14
Job asked the question that every man must ask at some point in his life. It is interesting to note that the same man, Job, also said, “I know that my redeemer liveth,” and also, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Perhaps the reason this question is so much on my mind is the fact that this week I have been called upon to speak at the funeral of two great saints of God. Both of these people had distinguished themselves in this life because of their good works, their labors of love -- both had brilliant faith in God through his son, Jesus Christ. It is such a pleasant thing to be able to give such glowing reports of what people have accomplished in the opportunity given them in this life.
Should we think then that the grave ends all. Paul, the apostle, has said, “O death, where is thy sting, O grave, where is thy victory.” He says, “Death is swallowed up in victory. Then he tells us how the victory comes as he continues, “But thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
We should not lose sight of the fact that our victory is through Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the whole world. We must invest our lives in God through Jesus Christ to receive the promise of his heavenly grace for us. This investment produces far greater dividends than any other possible investment we ever can make.
I recall a story about the English Field General, Wellington who had crossed the English Channel and was engaged in battle against the famous French General, Napoleon. After the battle they were sending signals by sight back to England. The message began “Wellington defeated ... and then a fog rolled in, and the only message was that Wellington was defeated. All of England was in deep despair -- but then the fog lifted and the rest of the message came through. In its entirety the message read, “Wellington defeated Napoleon at Waterloo.”
Without Jesus Christ as the Savior of our soul, the Lord of our life -- the same kind of fog can settle in our lives, and we can only see the message “Jesus Christ defeated...” and death becomes such a dismal experience that even life becomes folly but as we come with all our hearts to Jesus Christ the fog of life is cleared away -- and we see the full message. “Jesus Christ defeated death at Calvary, and in the resurrection that followed on the third day.”
What we believe makes a great difference. If a man does not believe in God’s answer for life and death -- Jesus Christ -- I cannot see how anything more than futility can be the hope of his life. Job said, through much suffering, “I know that my redeemer liveth.” I hope that you can make that statement today. God Bless You.
